As we leave tomorrow, we wanted to go to the Blue Mountains today, and after some investigation it worked out to be cheaper to hire a car for the day for sightseeing, and then drop the car at the airport tomorrow morning instead of go by shuttle bus. It also meant we didn’t have to get up at 5am for the bus ;)
When we picked up the car we got a free “upgrade”. This was quite funny, as when we got into the car we couldn’t find the handbrake. It turned out that this was an automatic and the handbrake was actually a footbrake! Crazy as if you forgot you were driving an auto and decided to change gear you’d come to an immediate stop! Luckily Marc’s a great driver so this didn’t happen – although there were a couple of times when he realised we were driving with the brake on!
The sun was out today, which was wonderful. Our first stop in the Blue Mountains was at a waterfall lookout; unfortunately with there being a drought in Auz it was a mere trickle. There were spectacular views here and you could see the blue haze created by the eucalyptus sap - hence where the Blue Mountains get its name.
You could see the volcanic activity of the past here in the rocks as there was drip marks and the red rocks beneath the top layer of rock, almost shell like.
The next lookout was much better and you could see the 3 sisters in the distance (3 stacks of rocks – there used to be 7), this is where you can walk down 1000 steps to the valley floor!
For lunch we stopped off on the high street and had a pie and soft drink. We then managed to find some free parking – it’s just crazy they charge about $10 for parking but if you go a block or so down the road, it’s free!
We decided to head down the 1000 steps, which was quite a challenge. Your legs just don’t want to step down anymore after about 400 so you have to be very careful you don’t slip. There was this little boy who was walking up them, he couldn’t of been more than 4 years old, brave little boy (& his parents obviously).
Once at the bottom we walked the 2.5km along the valley floor through the forest to the steepest railway in the world.
Ev was not quite prepared for this but was a good sport. There was not much keeping you in and lucky enough we went up backwards as going down would have been far too much for Ev to handle. It was about an 80-degree slope.
We then had some much needed ice-cream before walking back to the Echo Point where we started off at. Seeing spectacular views along the way.
We got to the car round 6ish and had planned on going to Hard Rock Café for dinner but Scott had already left work so we went to a local South African type restaurant called Ribs & Rump in Manly.
The food here was excellent, and whilst we were waiting for dinner, a magician entertained us with a few tricks. You always think you know the trick and that you’ll be able to spot what they’re doing, but you never can;) This was a really good end to our Sydney visit.
