So we're at Uluru (or Ayers Rock as its more commonly known under its English name), and it's supposedly one of the dryest places on Earth. But not today, on no. We landed with a typically English cloudy sky, and literally as soon as we had the tent up, the heavens opened and it bucketed down for about 15 mins!! Luckily we managed to get ALL our luggage in our tent - two backpacks, two sports bags, food, sleeping bags etc - so it was pretty cramped with just enough room for us. If Marc was Peter Crouch, he would be sleeping with his knees outside ;)
We opted for camping, mainly cos it is so damn expensive to do anything else. Campsites are reasonable at $25, but anything with solid foundations cost from $180!!!
We're here for two nights - one full day - so we acted on impulse and booked up our activities - "Sounds of Silence" for that evening and "Uluru at Sunrise" for the next morning (4:30am start!!). But more on these later...
First we needed to deal with the fly situation!! Now there are flies, and there are annoying flies, then there are Uluru flies!!! They are a competely different breed and love landing on your face. When you wipe them away, then they come straight back again. So, to the hat shop to buy our genunine kangaroo leather Burma hats to protect us from the sun (hopefully). Then we got some fly nets which look completely ridiculous and Marc almost refused to buy one, but we were assurred that "everyone wears one", and anyone who doesnt comes back to get one the next day!! And, by God, were we pleased we got them - they saved our sanity ;)
The rain cleared, some of the clouds shifted, and then it was time for the tour...
